What is Optical Bonding?

Engineer-reviewed Oct 11, 2026

Optical bonding is the process of filling the air gap between a display and its cover glass or touch panel with a clear adhesive (OCA or OCR), which removes internal reflections and improves sunlight readability, durability and touch accuracy.

How optical bonding works

In a conventional ("air-gap") assembly, the cover glass or touch panel sits a fraction of a millimetre above the LCD. Each glass–air boundary reflects about 4% of incoming light, so sunlight bounces off several surfaces before it reaches your eye together with the image.

Optical bonding fills that gap with a transparent adhesive whose refractive index is close to glass:

  • OCA (optically clear adhesive): a dry film, laminated under pressure. It is clean and consistent, best for small and medium sizes.
  • OCR / LOCA (liquid optically clear resin): dispensed as a liquid and UV- or heat-cured. It handles larger sizes, uneven surfaces and thicker gaps.

Benefits

Benefit

Why

Sunlight readability

Removes internal reflections, so contrast stays high outdoors

No condensation

No air gap where moisture can fog

Impact resistance

The cover glass is supported across its whole area

Touch accuracy

Less parallax between finger and image

Trade-offs

Bonding adds cost and a process step, and rework is difficult: a bonded panel with a defect is usually scrapped. It is worth it for outdoor, industrial and premium products.

Frequently asked questions

Is optical bonding worth the cost?

For outdoor, high-brightness, rugged or premium products, yes. It often improves sunlight readability more than adding backlight brightness.

What is the difference between OCA and OCR bonding?

OCA is a dry adhesive film laminated under pressure; OCR is a liquid resin cured with UV or heat. OCR suits larger and uneven assemblies.
