Custom TFT Displays
Most custom display needs are solved by modifying a standard panel: changing the FPC, raising backlight brightness, adding capacitive touch, a printed cover glass or optical bonding. These changes keep tooling cost and MOQ low. A fully custom TFT cell is only economical at high volumes because it needs new glass tooling and large minimum orders.
Customization levels
Level | Examples | Tooling | Typical MOQ | Typical sample time |
|---|---|---|---|---|
Configuration | Interface mode, backlight current, connector choice | None | Low | Days |
Light customization | FPC length/shape, high-brightness backlight, CTP, cover glass printing, optical bonding | Low | Hundreds of pcs | 3–6 weeks |
Mechanical customization | Custom frame, mounting, bonded cover lens outline | Moderate | Hundreds to low thousands | 4–8 weeks |
Full custom TFT cell | New active area, aspect ratio or glass outline | High | Tens of thousands | Several months |
What you can change on a standard panel
- FPC: length, shape, connector, pin order, which is useful to match an existing mainboard.
- Backlight: brightness up to sunlight-readable levels, LED driver integration, colour point.
- Touch: projected capacitive with glove or water tuning, or resistive.
- Cover glass: thickness, outline, printed border and logo, icon windows, AR/AG/AF coatings.
- Optical bonding: OCA or OCR bonding for readability and robustness.
- Interface: on-board bridges or adapter boards (for example HDMI or LVDS).
When does full custom make sense?
Only when your volume justifies the glass tooling and MOQ, or when no standard active area fits. Even then, starting from an existing cell size and changing the outline, FPC and cover lens is usually faster and far less risky.
What we need to quote
Size or active area, resolution, interface, brightness, touch, operating temperature, a mechanical sketch if available, and annual volume.
Custom display FAQ
What is the MOQ for a custom TFT display?
Light customizations of a standard panel usually start from a few hundred pieces. A fully custom TFT cell typically needs tens of thousands of pieces to justify glass tooling.
How long does a custom display take?
Light customizations usually take 3–6 weeks to samples. Full custom cells take several months from design approval to samples.
Can you change only the FPC so the panel fits my existing board?
Yes. FPC changes are one of the most cost-effective customizations and a common way to replace an EOL panel without redesigning the mainboard.
