Why square displays took off
The 86 mm × 86 mm wall plate is the standard switch format across China, Europe and much of Asia. A 4″ square display behind a matching cover glass turns a light switch into a smart home control panel without changing the wall box.

Integration notes
- Choose a bonded cover glass with a printed border. It hides the panel edges and gives a flush, premium finish.
- Plan the 3-wire SPI init for ST7701S-based 480×480 panels; see ST7701S.
- Leave room for the mains-powered PSU and relay board behind the display in the wall box.

Frequently asked questions
What size display fits an 86 wall box?
A 3.95″–4″ square display (480×480 or 720×720) behind an 86×86 mm cover glass is the standard choice.
Can ESP32-S3 drive a 720×720 display?
It is at the edge of what ESP32-S3 RGB can do and leaves little memory bandwidth. For 720×720, ESP32-P4 with MIPI DSI or a Linux SoC is more comfortable.
Which touch controller do square displays use?
GT911 or similar 5-point capacitive controllers over I2C are the most common.
