Custom TFT Display: MOQ, Tooling Cost and Lead Time Explained

What really drives custom display cost and minimum order quantities, and how to get a custom fit without a custom glass.

Why full custom is expensive

A TFT cell is built on large mother-glass sheets. A new active area or outline means new photomasks and cutting, plus a dedicated batch of glass, polarizers and driver ICs. Those materials cannot be reused for another product, so the factory needs an order large enough to absorb the setup, typically tens of thousands of pieces.

Smaller glass sizes often carry higher MOQs, because more panels fit on each mother glass and a minimum batch produces more pieces.

The practical path: customize a standard panel

Most "custom display" requests are really about fit and function:

  • The connector does not match: change the FPC.
  • It is too dim: use a high-brightness backlight plus optical bonding.
  • We need touch and a branded front: add a printed cover glass with capacitive touch.
  • It must fit our enclosure: use a custom frame or a bonded cover lens outline.

All of these keep the standard glass cell and therefore its availability, reliability data and price.

Lead-time planning

Allow extra weeks around major holidays (especially Chinese New Year), and approve drawings quickly. Sample timing usually starts from drawing approval, not from the first email.

Checklist before asking for a quote

Size or active area, resolution, interface, brightness, touch type, operating temperature, a mechanical sketch, target price and annual volume. Volume decides which path is economical.

Frequently asked questions

Why is the MOQ so high for custom TFT displays?

A custom cell needs dedicated glass, masks and materials that cannot be used for any other product, and a production run costs about the same setup whether it makes 1,000 or 10,000 pieces.

How can I reduce custom display cost?

Start from a standard active area and customize the FPC, backlight, touch and cover glass instead of the glass cell itself.

Do samples have an MOQ?

Standard modules are available from 1 piece. Customized samples are usually built in small batches after tooling.

Not sure which display fits your design?

Send us your size, interface and host processor. A display engineer replies within 12 hours with 2–3 options, datasheets and init code. Samples from 1 pc.
