What is the difference between MIPI DSI, LVDS and eDP?
All three move pixel data over high-speed differential pairs, but they come from different worlds. MIPI DSI comes from mobile phones, LVDS from industrial and early laptop panels, and eDP from modern laptops.
| MIPI DSI | LVDS | eDP |
|---|---|---|---|
Typical sizes | 4″–10.1″ | 7″–21.5″ | 11.6″–17.3″ |
Max common resolution | 1920×1200 | 1920×1080 (dual) | 3840×2160 |
Cable length | Short | Long, robust | Short–medium |
Init sequence | Required | Not needed | EDID-based |
Typical hosts | RK3568, i.MX8M, RPi | RK3568, i.MX6/8 | x86, RK3588 |
When should I choose MIPI DSI?
Choose MIPI DSI for thin products on mobile-class SoCs where the panel sits close to the board. It needs very few pins but every panel has its own init sequence, so get it from the panel supplier.
When should I choose LVDS?
LVDS is the safe industrial default. It tolerates longer cables and electrical noise and needs no command-mode init. Many legacy 7″ and 10.1″ industrial panels are LVDS, which makes replacements easier.
When should I choose eDP?
Pick eDP for Full HD and higher on x86 or high-end ARM SoCs. EDID lets the host read panel timing automatically.

Frequently asked questions
Is LVDS obsolete?
No. LVDS remains common in industrial 7″–15.6″ panels because it is robust, well understood and tolerant of longer cables, even though new consumer panels favor MIPI DSI and eDP.
Can I convert MIPI DSI to LVDS?
Yes, with bridge chips such as the TI SN65DSI83/84. They add BOM cost and configuration effort, so prefer a panel that matches your SoC output when possible.
Which interface is easiest to bring up?
LVDS is usually easiest because timing is standard and there is no command-mode init. eDP is moderate thanks to EDID. MIPI DSI needs a vendor init sequence and careful timing.
