How Bright Does a Sunlight-Readable Display Need to Be?

Nits, contrast and reflections: what actually makes a TFT readable outdoors.

How many nits do I need?

Environment

Recommended brightness

Indoor office

250–400 nits

Bright indoor / shade

500–700 nits

Direct sunlight

1000+ nits

Why optical bonding matters

An air gap between cover glass and LCD creates two extra reflective surfaces. In sunlight those reflections can exceed the display's own light, destroying contrast. Optical bonding fills the gap with clear adhesive and removes them.

Frequently asked questions

Is 800 nits sunlight readable?

Often yes in combination with optical bonding and AR coating, but for direct midday sun 1000+ nits gives a comfortable margin.

Does higher brightness reduce lifetime?

Driving LEDs harder raises temperature and can shorten backlight life. Good high-brightness designs use efficient LEDs, thermal paths and ambient-light dimming.
