480×272 or 800×480?
At 5″ the trade-off is the same as at 4.3″: memory and bandwidth on the host against how sharp the text looks.
Frame buffer. An RGB panel has no memory of its own, so the host keeps the whole frame in RAM and streams it out continuously. In RGB565 (2 bytes per pixel):
- 480 × 272 × 2 = 261,120 bytes, about 255 KB.
- 800 × 480 × 2 = 768,000 bytes, 750 KB.
Double buffering doubles both figures. The ESP32-S3 has 512 KB of internal SRAM, so an 800×480 frame does not fit in it; ESP-IDF's RGB LCD driver can place the frame buffer in PSRAM instead (fb_in_psram).
Pixel rate. At 60 Hz the panel needs at least 480 × 272 × 60 ≈ 7.8 million pixels per second, or 800 × 480 × 60 ≈ 23 million for 800×480, plus the blanking periods in the panel's datasheet. Use the timing table of the exact model you order.
Sharpness. The same pixels spread over a larger diagonal: on 5.0″, 480×272 is about 110 pixels per inch and 800×480 about 187, against 128 and 217 at 4.3″. At 5″, 480×272 starts to look coarse for small text, so 800×480 is the usual choice when the host has the memory.
Rule of thumb: choose 480×272 for a small MCU without external RAM and a UI of large digits and icons. Choose 800×480 when you have PSRAM or SDRAM and the screen shows dense text, charts or a keyboard.
TN panels: pick the viewing direction
All 11 of our 5.0″ models with full product pages are TN panels: 3 at 480×272 and 8 at 800×480. A TN panel has an optimum viewing direction, given in the datasheet as 6 o'clock or 12 o'clock, and looks darker or inverted from the opposite side. Our 480×272 models are all 6 o'clock; the 800×480 models are split evenly between 6 and 12 o'clock. Pick the direction that matches how the product is mounted and viewed, for example 6 o'clock for a panel viewed from slightly below. The catalog lists the viewing direction for every model.
IPS around 5 inches
If people look at the screen from different sides, two IPS models sit just under 5″:
- 4.95″ 480×854, portrait, parallel RGB with an ST7701S driver. The ST7701S has to be configured over its 3-wire SPI port before the RGB stream starts. The RGB565 frame is about 801 KB.
- 4.99″ 720×1280, MIPI DSI, for SoCs and the ESP32-P4 rather than RGB-only MCUs. The RGB565 frame is 1,800 KB, and the minimum pixel rate at 60 Hz is about 55 million per second.
The factory table on this page also lists an 800×480 RGB model and a 720×1280 MIPI DSI model with full viewing angle.
Brightness and touch
The 5″ product pages list 250 to 600 nits, and three factory-table models offer backlight options from 200 to 1200 nits. For use near windows or outdoors, see how bright a sunlight-readable display needs to be. Most models have no touch panel; touch options differ by model and are shown in each listing.
Driving a 5-inch RGB panel
Many 4.3″, 5″ and 7″ RGB panels share a 40-pin 0.5 mm FPC, but confirm pin 1 and the backlight voltage before connecting. See the RGB interface page for wiring and timing, and best display for ESP32-S3 if you are building on Espressif. For larger HMIs, compare with 7-inch displays.
Frequently asked questions
What resolution is a 5-inch TFT display?
Most 5.0″ panels are 480×272 or 800×480. Slightly smaller IPS panels exist at 4.95″ 480×854 and 4.99″ 720×1280. All of them are listed on this page with their interface and brightness.
Can an ESP32-S3 drive a 5-inch 800×480 display?
Yes, over its RGB LCD interface. An 800×480 RGB565 frame is 750 KB, more than the 512 KB of internal SRAM, so put the frame buffer in PSRAM (the fb_in_psram option in ESP-IDF). 480×272 needs 255 KB.
Are 5-inch TFT displays TN or IPS?
The 5.0″ models with full product pages here are all TN, with a 6 or 12 o'clock viewing direction to match to how the product is mounted. For viewing from any side, choose the 4.95″ 480×854 RGB or 4.99″ 720×1280 MIPI DSI IPS models, or the full-viewing-angle 800×480 model in the factory table.
